If you are planning to travel to Turkey, this is exactly what you are looking for!!! We will teach you the basic 5 social words commonly used in Turkey that you need to know.

As known in the history of Turkish culture and their people are so social. So just a few words can impress the locals & likes you even more! I have put together a guide on Turkish culture and social traditions that you will encounter when visiting Turkey.

  1. HOŞ BULDUK – WE FEEL WELCOME

You will hear HOŞ GELDiNiZ phrase everywhere in turkey from the airport once you arrived in Turkey, at the Turkish restaurant so the phrase means Welcome and you should return by saying HOŞ BOLDUK which means we feel welcome.

  1. ELLERINE SAĞLIK – HEALTH TO YOUR HANDS.

As I started by saying that Turkish culture involves being very sociable. So anytime while you are around Turkey you might find yourself invited to a wedding ceremony or to a house for dinner. Remember to say HOŞ BOLDUK when entering the house and to leave your shoes outside the door. As shoes are not allowed in the house.

So after the meal, if you really want to impress the cooker and the mother of the house just say ELLERINE SAĞLIK which means health to your hands and also an appreciation for a good meal, at this point the cooker will return to you by saying AFIYET OLSUN Which means Bon Appetite or Enjoy your meal.

  1. KOLAY GELSIN – MIGHT IT BE EASY TO YOU.

It doesn’t matter which kind of work or to who the person is doing. From the road cleansers to the shop owners the bus drivers anyone who is working just say to them KOLAY GELSIN and wait for their impression it’s like you have given extra energy to the worker. The phrase means might it be easy for you.

  1. TEŞEKÜR EDERIM – THANK YOU.

It’s a custom almost in every culture to thank someone after doing a favor or anything to help you. But in Turkey, it has a different meaning more than what you thought.

When you buy something from a kiosk or a shopkeeper after having your staffs just say TEŞEKÜR EDERIM. It’s cool as giving someone who walked under a very sunny day a glass of cold water.

  1. ĞÖRÜŞÜRÜZ – SEE YOU

After a small talk with a friend or after having your meal at a restaurant or your invited house remember to say ELLERINE SAĞLIK, even after buying your staffs and saying TEŞEKÜR EDERIM as you leave the place its good to say ĞÖRÜŞÜRÜZ that means goodbye or see you and they will reply by ĞÖRÜŞÜRÜZ or HOŞ ÇAKAL which means bye or see you too.
